Becoming a Union Member

Union contractors only hire Union workers. If you are not yet a Union member, then you need to secure employment with a Union contractor, and get a Work Permit from the District Council 30 office. A Work Permit needs to be obtained before you arrive on the work site.

Here's how it works:

Union contractors only hire Union workers. If you are not yet a Union member, then you need to secure employment with a Union contractor through the Union Representative associated with the Local you plan to join. Your Union Representative will then arrange for a Work Permit from the District Council 30 office. A Work Permit needs to be obtained before you arrive on the work site.

Your Union Representative will begin calling the companies that seem to fit the type of work that you are looking for (painting, drywall finishing, or glazing), informing the employer of your qualifications. You should also call the union contractors for employment. You should ask to fill out an application for employment with each company.

Your Union Representative will not limit the search to contractors that are in an area close to you. Many contractors are based in Chicago and work in the surrounding suburbs.

Until you are hired, it is a good idea to check in with your Union Representative on an average basis of once a week.

If you have past experience in the trade, you may wish to contact the Apprenticeship Training Facility to discuss the possibility of having an evaluation of your skills conducted by an Apprenticeship Instructor (630-966-1451).
