Apprenticeship

PDC 30's JATF recognizes the need for structured training to maintain the highest level of skill and competence demanded in the finishing industry. Registered apprenticeship provides the most practical and sound method to meet that need, to prepare individuals to be proficiently skilled journeyworkers, and to ensure that the industry has an adequate supply of highly skilled craftspersons.

Use the tabs below to learn more about the work of PDC 30 apprentices, qualifications, and how to apply.

050_c_tabPDC 30 apprentices prepare for careers in painting and decorating, drywall finishing, and glazing. They...

  • Paint indoor and exterior homes—old and new—as well as large public works structures—such as bridges and water towers.
  • Finish drywall for basic and elaborate structural designs.
  • Hang wallcoverings and apply attractive faux finishes in homes, commercial businesses, and office buildings.
  • Remove and encapsulate lead in older buildings.
  • Apply durable industrial coatings to factories and industrial facilities.
  • Operate high-pressure washing equipment.
  • Install windows in new and old homes and businesses.
  • Construct curtain wall systems and skylights.

104_c_tabBefore being accepted as apprentices, applicants must meet all of the following qualifications and requirements:

  • AGE: All applicants must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
  • EDUCATION: must have a high school diploma or a GED certificate, or possess evidence of satisfactory progress toward achieving a high school diploma or a GED certificate.
  • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: must be physically capable of performing the essential functions of the chosen trade without posing a direct threat to the health and safety of themselves or any other individuals, with reasonable accommodations.

Equal Employment Opportunity: The recruitment, selection, employment, and training of apprentices during their apprenticeship, shall be without discrimination because of race, color, religion, national origin, age, sex, sexual orientation, or disability. Sponsoring employers and the JATF agree to take affirmative action to provide equal opportunity in apprenticeship and to operate the apprenticeship program as required under Title 29 of the CFR, Part 30. The apprenticeship program will be conducted, operated and administered in conformity with applicable provisions of 29 CFR part 30, or any approved State plan for equal opportunity in apprenticeship in which the Committee participates.

089_c_tabPDC 30's JATF is a "Letter of Intent to Hire" program, meaning the JATF does not hire apprentices; only employers hire apprentices. If the employer wishes to classify a new employee as an apprentice, the employer issues a Letter of Intent to Hire written to the JATF and the apprentice then applies to the program. If the applicant meets the qualifications, he or she becomes an apprentice and remains so until program completion.

Apprenticeship applications, however, are accepted by the JATF from all applicants who have met and shown documented proof of all required qualifications.

Receipt of the properly completed application form, along with required supporting documents will constitute a completed application. Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications and submitting the required documents will be notified of the next steps in the application process.

Completed applications by applicants who have not been hired by an employer will be retained and made available to employers seeking suitable candidates and/or referrals for job openings.

The staff of the JATF include a full-time Director of Training, full- and part-time Instructors, and an Administrative Assistant. Instructors are journeyworkers who possess advanced levels of knowledge about the crafts and/or topics for all subjects to be taught. They have been trained in teaching techniques and adult learning styles and remain current in their industry knowledge through industry-recognized certification programs and the development of new curriculum.
